Regional Policy Dialogue Series
Climate Change & Its Impact on Agriculture

πŸ“ Nagpur | June 30, 2025

Maharashtra has been central to India’s agricultural evolution, diverse in its agro-climatic zones, rich in crop variety, and home to millions of smallholder farmers. From the sugar belt of western Maharashtra to the cotton fields of Vidarbha and the pulse-growing regions of Marathwada, the state mirrors the complexities and potential of Indian agriculture.

Over the years, Maharashtra has faced its share of challenges, erratic rainfall, declining soil health, water scarcity, and market volatility. Yet, these have been met with resilience and innovation: from watershed management and micro-irrigation to farmer producer companies and climate-smart farming practices.

As agriculture adapts to changing climate and economic realities, the upcoming Regional Policy Dialogue in Nagpur offers a timely platform. It will bring together farmers, policymakers, researchers, and agri-entrepreneurs to shape a roadmap for sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient agriculture in Maharashtra, one that can inspire similar transitions across the country.

Agriculture Technologies for a Sustainable Future

This session will explore how a wide spectrum of agricultural technologies can shape a more sustainable and resilient future for farming in Maharashtra. In a state where cotton, pulses, and horticulture dominate the landscape, the focus goes beyond just mechanization and infrastructure. Technological solutions such as genetically modified crops, gene editing, and bio-inputs are becoming increasingly critical. Alongside digital tools, solar irrigation, and post-harvest innovations, this session will highlight the need for an enabling policy and research environment that supports both innovation and last-mile adoption.

Session 1
Sustaining Soil and Water Resources for Agricultural Resilience

Long-term agricultural productivity and climate resilience depend heavily on the health of our soil and the availability of water, both of which are under increasing pressure. Maharashtra, with its diverse agro-climatic zones and heavy reliance on rainfed farming, is witnessing declining soil fertility, falling groundwater tables, and increased vulnerability to droughts. This session will examine integrated solutions for enhancing soil health through regenerative practices, and organic matter restoration. It will also explore sustainable ‘Water. management approaches such as rainwater harvesting, watershed developmentrand Γ₯picro-irrigation. The aim is to identify scalable models and policy interventions that can sec0re these vital resources for future generations of farmers.
